The Future Catastrophizer
Threat anticipation + worst-case projection + hypervigilance
Your brain runs threat simulations before anything has happened.
Future-focused overthinking feels like planning, but it's actually threat management. Your mind scans for danger before it arrives — and finds it everywhere.
Research on threat anticipation shows this pattern activates the same stress response as actual danger. Your nervous system can't tell the difference between 'imagined' and 'real'.
You're not preparing for the future. You're spending the present in it.
When a catastrophic thought arrives, ask: 'What's actually true right now?' Ground your nervous system in present evidence before your mind runs to worst-case futures.
The Past Ruminator
Retrospective replay + post-event processing + regret loops
You replay conversations, decisions, and moments long after they're over.
Rumination feels like problem-solving, but it isn't. It's a replay loop that re-activates the emotional charge of an event without actually resolving it.
Research shows rumination increases cortisol, maintains low mood, and makes future anxiety more likely. The loop isn't working through the experience — it's re-living it.
The past is fixed. Your interpretation of it doesn't have to be.
Set a 'rumination window' — 10 minutes deliberately. Then redirect. The goal isn't to stop thinking about it; it's to contain it so it doesn't take over the whole day.
The Decision-Paralysed Overthinker
Option overwhelm + analysis of analysis + indecision as avoidance
Every decision carries the weight of every possible consequence.
You're not bad at decisions. You're too aware of what could go wrong with each option. The more you analyse, the less clear each option becomes.
Decision paralysis is perfectionism applied to choices. There's a version where you pick the right one and a version where you don't — and that gap is intolerable.
Most decisions are recoverable. The cost of not deciding is often higher than the cost of deciding imperfectly.
Set a decision deadline. For low-stakes choices, 2 minutes. For bigger ones, 24-48 hours. After that, the loop is no longer helping — it's just running.
The Productive Analyst
Deep processing + thorough thinking + generally functional but exhausting
You think things through carefully — sometimes too carefully.
Your overthinking is mostly functional: you process deeply, prepare thoroughly, and rarely act without understanding the terrain. But it's also exhausting.
The challenge isn't that you think too much — it's that the thinking doesn't always know when to stop. Completion feels uncertain, so the loop continues.
You don't need to think less. You need better off-switches.
Build an explicit 'close the loop' ritual. After processing something, write one sentence: 'I've thought about this enough. Here's where I land.' That sentence is permission to stop.
Preguntas frecuentes
