Resultados
The Self-Critical Perfectionist
Internal standards + self-punishment + identity fused with performance
Your harshest critic lives rent-free in your head.
You hold yourself to standards you'd never apply to someone you care about. When you fall short, the response isn't disappointment — it's attack.
This pattern often starts as a way to stay safe (if I'm perfect, I'm beyond criticism). But the internal bar keeps moving, and the punishment for missing it is always disproportionate.
You don't need higher standards. You need kinder ones.
The next time you make a mistake, write down what you'd say to a friend in the same situation. Notice the gap between that and what you said to yourself.
The Procrastinating Perfectionist
Fear of imperfection + avoidance as protection + paralysis before start
You don't start because starting means it could be wrong.
Perfectionism isn't always about doing too much. Sometimes it's about not starting at all — because a blank page can't be judged.
Procrastination is perfectionism in disguise. If you never begin, you never produce something imperfect. The delay feels like avoiding failure, but it is the failure.
The draft doesn't have to be good. It just has to exist.
Set a 'bad first draft' rule: the first version is allowed to be terrible. Done and imperfect beats not-started and theoretically perfect every time.
The Socially Prescribed Perfectionist
External expectations + performing for others + fear of judgment
You work to the standard you think others are judging you by.
Your perfectionism isn't about your own standards — it's about the imagined bar set by others. You're performing excellence for an audience that may not even be watching.
Socially prescribed perfectionism is particularly exhausting because the standard is invisible and constantly shifting depending on who you're around.
You can't meet a standard you invented for someone else's imagined expectations.
Ask yourself: 'Whose standard is this, actually?' Often you'll find you're aiming for someone's approval they haven't actually asked for.
The Adaptive Achiever
High standards + self-compassion + growth orientation
You want to do things well — and you're okay when you don't.
You care about quality, but you've learned to separate your performance from your worth. High standards and self-kindness can coexist.
When things go wrong, you process it and move on. You don't need it to be perfect to feel proud of it.
This is the version of perfectionism that actually works long-term. Protect it — especially under stress, when old patterns resurface.
Notice when stress pulls you back toward harsher self-talk. Your adaptive pattern is a skill, not a default — and high-pressure moments are where it needs the most deliberate reinforcement.
